The FLY SAVER™ was developed as the result of fishing streams with low- hanging foliage often experienced in the Smokey Mountains of Western North Carolina and other streams in the Appalachians.  Having traveled through New England and other parts of the United States, it is obvious many fishermen are challenged by the fly snagged in foliage…. just out of reach.

The FLY SAVER™ was developed over a three-year period by trout fishermen through prototyping, experimentation and stream testing.  It is manufactured in Western North Carolina and is not a product of China.  What we have invented and used extensively is a compact, light-weight, easy to use device that will retrieve most flies snagged within reach of your fly rod and extended arm….as far as 15 feet.

All the components of The FLY SAVER™ have been carefully analyzed and materials chosen as best suited for the stringent requirements.  The cutting elements are made from high-grade, stainless steel.  This material was selected for its ability to be heat treated to maintain its cutting edges and to provide toughness and strength for exerting great cutting forces without breaking.

The cord used to provide the closing action of the cutting edges is a specialty product with a pull test of 180 pounds.  It has minimal stretch and knots tightly.  Attached to the cord is a handle made of a unique wood that has been tested assuring extreme water resistance and is protected by a proven oil finish.  This handle is grooved at the ends allowing the cord to be wound about the length for storage.

All other metal components are stainless steel.  The clip rings attached to the moving thumb™ and the stationary cutting hook™ are able to withstand the high mechanical forces.  Underneath the stainless screw holding the members together is a Bellville washer which is also a spring providing a pre-load on the two members.  This pre-load keeps the device in the open ready-to-use position.

In preparing for fly retrieval, contours of the cutting elements align on one another in “the ready to use mode”.  From this position the “eye hook” is placed on the tip eye of the fly rod.  At this point, it is helpful to restrict the line to the rod about 18 inches or so below the rod tip, so it doesn't interfere with placing the cutting hook™ on the limb behind the fly.  This restriction is easily accomplished by placing a knotted rubber band around the rod capturing the line to the rod.  This band is also used to contain handle, cord and cutting members together when not in use.

At this point, the cutting hook of The FLY SAVER™ can be extended and placed on the limb behind the fly.  Even though The FLY SAVER™ is light, weighing less than 1 oz., it should be positioned on a limb of size adequate to hold the weight and offer the slight resistance required to close The FLY SAVER™ around the limb into the cutting position.  Light force is applied to the cord as the tip of the fly rod is removed from the immediate area of the “snagged” fly.  A quick jerk of the handle closes The FLY SAVER™ cutting edges around the limb.  Depending on the size of the limb, several jerks will ratchet the cutting edges through the limb allowing it to be retrieved along with the fly……..“don’t miss the hatch”.

Directions for safe and effective use:

  • Similar to a knife, this is a cutting device with sharp blades and must be handled with care.
  • When pulling or “jerking” the cord for cutting, pull to the side not directly toward your body.
  • Do not place your fingers into the cutting edges of the device.
  • Do not walk with cord lying at or about your feet.  Stepping on the cord could result in closing the device with potential for injury.
  • Practice safe use of The FLY SAVER™ in a controlled situation away from the fishing site.  You should quickly learn to use it effectively.
  • The FLY SAVER™ is a very sturdy cutting device with the ability to cut vegetation as large as the average size pencil.  Of course different woods vary in hardness.  Test The FLY SAVER™ before use.  If placed on a limb too large to cut, the challenge will be retrieving it.
  • Be responsible with The FLY SAVER™ and always keep it out of the reach of children.
